Excellent rating
Alberto Alberto C Very well planned tour in stunning area with excellent service from Tesfa and team Family of 6 did a 3 day, 2 night tour in Danakil Depression. The region is stunning but before getting there we were worried about the basic accommodation/ infrastructure (e.g. sleeping on mattresses under the stars and lack of toilets) since my parents are 60+. However Tesfa (one of the owners and our guide) organised everything extremely well. He ensured everything was clean and the food was cooked well and to our taste. He planned the tour very well so we were walking at night or early morning when it wasn't very hot and then driving in AC cars in the heat of the day. He also tried to organise so we would get to places first or when there were not many people so we could enjoy the full natural beauty. He is very knowledgable and looked after us very well. He cares a lot about the local people and supporting them in a positive way, which we appreciated a lot. The drivers, chef and whole team were very good. I would highly recommend Magma Flow Tours for a tour to Danakil. They are based in Mekele and specialise in these tours so are a great company to choose for your trip! Pari Fantastic Tours We had great tours with Magma Flow during our stay in Ethiopia. We joined their 3 days 2 nights Danakil Depression Tour, and had a private tour in Omo valley and Yirga Cheffe for 10 days 9 nights. Israel, their manager, is very helpful. We contacted him to organize the trips a week before coming to Ethiopia, he was very responsive and prompt. He is also very helpful in many things. For example, we lost our checked baggage when we arrived Ethiopia by flight, he helped us to call the airlines many times to trace the lost baggage. Their crew in our Danakil Depression was fantastic! They are helpful, friendly, energetic, playful and can speak English. Our driver, Merhawi, is very nice, skillful and friendly. He solved problems for us during the journey, like negotiating with locals on photography. He also explained local cultures to us. The crew also include a guide, a cook, and a crew team car driver. They are all nice people. Omo valley is also great with our driver Eginda. Other then visiting different tribes and markets, he would also look for bull jumping ceremony around the area during our stay, and luckily, we were able to join one during the trip. He speaks English, and would look for good accommodations available at the area. Overall we are extremely happy having tours with Magma Flow Tours. We would highly recommend them to organize your trips. Marco Chan Excellent driver; Israel and company really care but the guide on our tour was lazy and absent It disappoints me greatly to be the first negative reviewer for Magma Flow. It seems to be a reliable and caring company which, on this occasion, made a mistake in hiring a sub-standard guide for our Danakil tour. POSITIVE ASPECTS OF OUR TOUR: - Incredible landscapes and amazing overall experience. - Responsive and professional communication from the manager (Israel) when booking. The company do appear to really care about their reputation even though the quality of service delivery from the guide (Fana) was so low. - The driver (Sisay) was excellent - professional, patient, careful, always on time. - Food was tasty, varied, nourishing, plentiful and on time. Excellent cook. - Bucket shower with pump at bathing pool was very helpful. - Friendly staff and drivers overall. DISAPPOINTING ASPECTS OF OUR TOUR: The attitude of the guide, Fana, was the single big disappointment of the tour. It was not a question of her ability but of absence, non-communication and apparent laziness. Many little things added up to leave us disappointed: - Staff (guide and drivers) drinking coffee and tea in front of us at lunchtime (in Abala). We were not offered tea/coffee. We asked for it. ‘Ishi’ (ok) was the response. None came. - Lunch the next day at Abala. Same arrangement. When ordering tea and coffee we were made to pay for it. General attitude at Abala lunch spot was one of unfriendliness and lack of care. - Another member of our tour didn't have a sleeping bag. He asked for one before we left. 'Ishi' (ok) was the response, but it was forgotten, with no apology or attempt to make amends. He had enough blankets but slept uncomfortably. - The guide (Fana) was often absent when we arrived at a location, arriving later or going elsewhere to make other arrangements for other tour groups. This gave the impression that she was too busy or not concerned with our welfare. SUMMARY: We were well fed. We were comfortable. The driver and cook were excellent. However, the bare minimum was done by our guide, Fana. Such an approach can leave you feeling like a cattle being ferried through. A more 'human touch' is necessary - rapport, being present, being on hand to answer questions. This was not the case. A GENERAL SUGGESTION TO ALL VISITORS TO DANAKIL: The magma activity of the Danakil volcanoes is changing all the time. Whichever tour operator you choose, before visiting Erta Ale volcano, ask for an honest account of how active or dormant the volcano might be. You may be disappointed to travel so far to see only a few tiny cracks of lava far below you in the crater, while a tour operator that genuinely wants you to have an amazing experience might go the extra effort to take you to see more active lava / magma flowing. Run Africa Nice outfit. Thoughtful, flexible. Israel Kindaya a former guide who founded this small operator looks far too young to be as successful as he is. His crews are great especially Farnah and her husband Moolé really looked after us in our one night camping in the Danakil. Oh and not forgetting Michelin. Great company. Alain C 2 days Danakil Depression I was lucky enough to make this wonderful and unforgettable trip with magma flow and the professional team around Israel. They are absolutely professional and they know what is important on this trip: security and respect and knowledge about the region and the people they are with. of course the tourists but also the Arfar. I recommend everyone to do the 2 or 5 days. all in all an unforgettable trip that I would always repeat. They made everything possible: swimming, delicious food, cold beer, wine for the sunset and being first at all places before other groups arrived. But it was still relaxed and they took care of our needs to take photos from different experiences like the caravans coming from Eritrea! They helped me with anything I needed after the trip! many thanks for everything. Tinishu Fritz R Reliable and well organized We were disappointed after a few days hiking in Simien Mountains with a big monopoly agency and decided to cancel further agreement with them for Danakil depression and Dallol. Upon arrival to one of the guests houses in Mekele, its owner recommended 3 local smaller agencies and Magma Flow was among them. On the day of arrival we went to the city and had a short discussion with Magma Flow representative, who shortly explained about the tour and offered us a good price for a 2 day tour. We were picked up at 10 and left Mekele at 11:20. The highlight of the first day are Assale Red rocks, salt field, natural salty smimming pool and sunset at Assale lake. The guys offer wine and beer at the Assale lake (as much as you can drink, for free!) The next day we woke up at around 4, had a nice breakfast (omelette, pancakes with peanut butter, chokolate paste, honey, jam) and went to Dallol at 5, where we met sunrise at around 7 and walked around the colorful area for couple of hours, then visited unusual rock formation and lake with "oily" reddish water. We had our lunch at Abala and were brought back to Mekele at around 3 p.m. What can be improved? 1. It would be great, if the food in Abala village can be improved. 2. The travel agency can make an agreement with local people in Hamedela and leave mattresses in the village. 3. Salad and omelette can be cooked without chili pepper :) Shimnik GOOD TOUR GUIDES Small but they are legal business and they know very well how to tour and travel, how to make the best out of the trip. Well organized and very friendly. Thank you mr. Anne in Paris 2-day Danakil Tour I did a 2-day Danakil Depression tour (booked directly with the company, not through TripAdvisor). The staff took an already amazing experience to the next level. We were in a small group of 5 people (compared to a 20+ group we passed which was presumably ETT). The food was excellent, the staff was friendly, and there were many extra little things to make the experience even more amazing. I didn't go to Erta'Ale, but if I make it back, I will definitely be doing so with Magma Flow. Thomas
